Officially named "Mt. McKinley," most Alaskans use the Athabascan name, "DENALI," which means the "High One." Some people just call it "The Mountain."
It is the tallest mountain in North America at 20,320 feet. Measured from its base at an elevation of 2,000 feet, Denali has an 18,000 foot vertical rise, the biggest vertical rise of any mountain in the world. It is magnificent in every respect. It creates its own weather and is shrouded in clouds most of the time. 70% of the visitors to Denali National Park don't get to see Denali. We saw it every day we were at Camp Denali except the morning we left. I was fortunate to be able to photograph it from several locations and in several kinds of light.
