July 3 We began class by completing our discussion of Depth of Field and hyperfocal distance. We looked at how to use a hyperfocal distance chart when using a zoom lens without a depth of field scale. A hyperfocal distance chart was provided with a handout. We talked about how to shoot fireworks displays. With your camera on a tripod or bean bag, focus your medium focal length lens on infinity and point it at the place in the sky where the fireworks will appear. With 100 speed slide film in the camera, set the lens aperture at f/8 and the shutter on "B" (for bulb). Wait until you record 1 to 3 bursts of fireworks, close the shutter and start again. Our major topic of the evening was CLOSEUP PHOTOGRAPHY. We looked at how to use single and double element close-up filters, extensions tubes, teleconverters and macro lenses. Suggested techniques and the advantages and disadvantages of each were discussed. During the break the class had the opportunity to use closeups filters and an extension tube. After the break we looked at working with light. The quality of the light is often more important then the subject itself. Great light can make an average subject look great. Poor light can make a good subject look boring. We concluded class by looking at student work. There were lots of handouts tonight. If you missed class tonight, check with me to get your handouts. We will have a Field Trip this Saturday morning, July 7, at Milham Park at 9 AM. Our purpose is to photograph ducks and geese. We will meet at the parking lot near the intersection of Kilgore and Lover's Lane. We will mostly use medium to long focal length lenses. No class next week. Our next regular class session will be July 17. |
