FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY

The major topic for the evening was flash photography. We explored Guide Number (GN) flash photography and its importance. We looked at both manual and TTL flash. We tested flash units to get an estimate of their GN.

SLIDE SANDWICHES

To make a slide sandwich, you put two different slides into the projector at the same time and re-photograph them. You need a graphic slide and a background slide.

The best graphic slide is a dark object with a light gray or white background.  This could be something like a windmill against a gray sky. The background should be overexposed by 2 or 3 stops.

Nicely colored skys make for good background slides. Shoot both horizontally and vertically and overexpose the sky by one or two stops. Flowers can also be used as backgrounds.

STUDENT WORK AND HANDOUTS

We concluded class by looking at student work and passing out LOTS of handouts.  If you missed class, pick up your handouts next week.

NEXT WEEK we will double expose the moon over the Art Institute (weather permitting).

FIELD TRIP

This Sunday, October 28, 5 PM at Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery. We will meet in the parking lot near the visitor's center. Go west 6 miles on M-43 (Main Street) from the intersection of M-43 and US 131. Turn left on Fish Hatchery Road.

We will not meet if it is raining or overcaste.

This owl photo was taken with a combination of flash and ambient light.
