EXPOSURE

We continued our exploration of exposure.  Last week we gave our attention primarily to subject metering and compensation for subject tonality. This week we looked  more closely at incident light metering and the use of the gray card. We also discussed Basic Daylight Exposure (BDE) also called the Sunny f16 rule or the FIG rule (the word FIG looks kind of like f16). We also looked at the Black Cat Exposure Guide for those situations when our camera meter is of little use. I passed out an exposure compensation card for both subject metering and gray card metering.

DEPTH OF FIELD

Since a number of different shutter speed and aperture combinations will give the same exposure, we looked at depth of field as one of the criteria that helps us make a choice of apertures. We did a depth of field exercise in class. I passed out a Depth of Field card to put in your camera bags.

WATERFALLS

For waterfalls to look normal, use shutter speeds around 1/60 to 1/125 of a second. For creamy "angel hair" waterfalls use shutter speeds of 1/2 second or longer. To freeze waterfalls, use shutter speeds of 1/500 second or faster.

ASSIGNMENTS

Go out and shoot a variety of subjects with different apertures to experiment with depth of field.

THIS SATURDAY

We will have a field trip Saturday at 10 AM at West Lake Nature Preserve, weather permitting. Our mission is to shoot fall color out in the bog. We will meet at the parking lot at 10 AM and walk the trail until we reach the plastic decking trail that goes out into the bog. It is a little squishy out there and the bottoms of your shoes will get a little wet on the way to our photo location.

Directions: In Portage, from the intersection of Center Road and South Westnedge, drive south on Westnedge for 1.1 miles until you get to Southshore Drive. Turn left onto Southshore and then turn left into the first driveway which takes you to the West Lake NP parking lot.

NEXT WEEK'S CLASS

Bring camera gear to class next week. If the weather is good we will take photos outside. If not, we will take photos inside.

If you missed class this week, be sure and ask for your Depth of Field and Hyperfocal Distance Cards.
