Canon G3 vs Canon G5 The Canon G3 is one of the best pro-sumer point and shoot digital cameras available today. I have one and it is my digital camera of choice when I am traveling light. The Canon G5 is a 5 megapixel update to the 4 megapixel G3 (there was no model G4). If you have been thinking about getting the G3 prior to the announcement of the G5, now you may be wondering which one to get. You may want to get the G3 anyway. The primary difference (other than changing the color to black) is the increase in resolution by 1 megapixel - not really a huge jump. If you know what you are doing, you can get really fine 8x10 and 11x14 prints from a G3. Is the added resolution of the G5 really worth the added cost? According to the reviews at DP Review, maybe not. Images from the G5 suffer from color fringing and other problems that the G3 does not have. In October of 2003, the G3 sells for around $500 and the G5 for around $640. I have a G3 that I am REALLY pleased with and I have no plans to get a G5. If I were choosing today between the G3 and the G5, I would pick the G3. If you are faced with a G3 vs G5 decision, read the reviews at DP Review first. You just might decide you are better off saving the money and getting better images with the G3. G3 Review at DP Review. G5 review at DP Review. Of all the digital camera review sites out there, I think DP Review is the best. October 8, 2003 |
