Harvard Glacier          Calving

Larger versions of these three images.

In College Fiord early one morning, we passed a large cruise ship sitting three miles from the face of Harvard Glacier.  At this distance the face of Harvard was merely a sliver.  We sailed closer, pushing our way through lots of ice and small bergs until we were only 3/4 of a mile from the face of the glacier. At this distance we could clearly see chunks of ice calving into the water.  The photo on the right is cropped from the middle of the first photo and you can see sea lions floating on the ice and house sized chunks of ice falling into the water.  The bottom photo is the splash just moments later.

The face of the glacier is about 175 feet tall.  The splash was nearly 100 feet high. Waves from the splash rocked our ship. We waited long enough to see several significant calvings.  We picked a small cruise ship so we could get this close to the action.  The calving would have been barely visible at best from the three mile distance of the larger cruise ship.

These photos were taken with a hand held 100-400mm zoom lens with image stabilization.
