Digital Solarization

The color image to the left was created by a process akin to solarization in the traditional darkroom.

Beginning with a black and white photo (grayscale in digital terms), the image was convereted to RGB mode:  Image > Mode > RGB (in Photoshop).

After the image has been converted to RGB mode, it still looks like a black and white image.  With a red color selected and the airbrush, the lips were colored red.  Curves was then selected (Image > Adjust > Curves)  and then one of the three colors, R, G, or B.  Tug on the line to colorize the whole image.  Go to curves again.  By bending and tugging on the line, you can create all kinds of different effects.  You can also grab one end of the line or the other and pull it up or down.  To create the above image, I pulled the line into a shape looking something like the letter "W".
